North Macedonia pushes cross-border gas links to boost energy security and regional integration

North Macedonia is advancing major cross-border gas infrastructure projects, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, underscoring energy connectivity as a key pillar of the country’s long-term development strategy.

PM Mickoski explained that North Macedonia is aligning its energy policy with broader technological ambitions, including developments in artificial intelligence. He noted that upgrades to the national electricity transmission network are already underway, alongside targeted investments in natural gas infrastructure.

Within this framework, construction is progressing on a natural gas pipeline connecting North Macedonia with Greece, while preparatory works are starting on a second interconnector that will link the country with Serbia. These projects are intended to enhance supply security and deepen regional energy integration.

According to PM Mickoski, the new gas connections are not only crucial for North Macedonia’s energy transition, but also have broader importance for southeastern Europe, contributing to diversification, resilience, and stronger regional cooperation.
